calm and chaos

By Maria Fernandes

one day, they argued
calm livid - out of character
“must you always be chaotic?”
chaos retorted in anger
“without me,
you would not be missed!”
outraged, they turned away
detached from the other...
believing it for the better...

miles between them
muttering good riddance
striding with renewed intent
both presently content
for a while...

calm paused a moment
fascinating scene unfolding
captivating her serene eyes
light receding, dark advancing
both momentarily embracing
no more day, but not yet night -
perfect harmony
till the light allows
the dark to shine
tiny stars sprinkle
up and down, all around
light nestled in its arms,
dark's beauty, profound
mates for eternity
it dawned on calm

chaos too had a sense
as the cool soft breeze
eased his angry brow
hypnotized by the dance
of the vibrant
kaleidoscope of time
parched land opened arms
to greet the thundercloud
the soft flame of fire,
spread a coat of warmth
round chilled spirits of night
he sighed…
in comprehension -
nature's true phenomenon

calm was not entirely
made for joy
at times she cried…
coveting wider smiles,
smiles too mask deep lines
chaos was not the only
mascot for fun
at the core of
relentless cacophony,
at times he lost
the will to survive
for one,
the garment of peace
was too plain and white
for the other,
the fury of many hues
had no breaks for quiet
calm yearned for chaos
chaos yearned for calm
both startled by
this desire for alliance

a little calm in chaos
a little chaos in calm,
brews a glorious blend
renders life grand
same as
night follows day
and day, night
seasons too pass
the baton of time
hues of green, sport
slivers of amber and brown
if all creation follow
this cardinal rule
why should it
differ for us?
each surmised

and in good time too,
for they had wandered long
and now, face-to-face
smiles of discernment
two sides - same coin
so these two
decided to
co-exist,
shook on it
leaving us no choice
but to accept them
entwined
