Babbling Daffodils – Delhi Poetry Slam

Babbling Daffodils

By Iraa Mohan

Along a dusty barren highway,
Popped up some fun daffodils,
That loved chatting away.

They chatted with the birds
and the butterflies.
They chatted with a lady
bug who was extra shy.

They tried very hard to chat with
the families that drove by.
Some people sang, some whistled,
A kid saw his phone
and munched his chips alone.

The Daffodils kept trying to
tell them the story of creation,
that the journey was
better than the destination.

But all who crossed that bustling road,
Couldn’t care for the flowers’
words, less or more.

One day came a mighty truck,
That crushed them to the core.
And then those lovely
Daffodils were babbling no more.

As the Earth mourned and the sky cried,
Tears of rain fell on the soil dried,
And quietly a seed sprouted
in the soil so still,
Ready to become the next
babbling daffodil!

  • An inside anecdote about Iraa’s poem!
When Iraa wrote the poem and showed it to her mom, she said do you want to end it on a sad note ? Iraa in her characteristic style said ‘ Nooooooo !’ Immediately Iraa added the last stanza giving the narrative a happy and looking forward stance !! Love you Iraa for being a sensitive and thoughtful daffodil 🌼 flower in our lives!! Nani 🥰

  • Congratulations!
It’s a stunning poem ! As a student of Literature, Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils ’ has been one of my favourites but it was from the human point of view. Now Iraa’s creativity has given a distinct individuality and voice to these much -loved flowers in such a powerful way that the two poems have become intertwined . I’m so proud of her !!

  • Iraa dear, many many congratulations to you, little girl! What a fascinating depiction of babbling daffodils in your beautiful poem! Wow, so young and you can imaginatively put in verse “Creation” and the " journey being better!" What a lovely blend of emotions……joy, happiness, isolation, sadness, hope and revival….all rolled in one nicely composed piece accompanied by the image of a host of pretty yellow daffodils! Shabash beti! Wishing you more and more moments of such flights of fancy in writing! Lots of love and blessings.

  • Unbelievably beautiful!!!!!
Hey little Ira, you and your expressions are no less than the beauty of those daffodils. Probably that little boy was drawn by the beautifully expressed words like yours, rather than looking out of the window. I too, wouldn’t leave my phone & miss the daffodils, when I’ll see a creativity, so beautiful.
God bless you, keep making your parents & grandparents proud of you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

Your ‘Babbling Daffodils’ touched my heart!
You have taken such a pertinent issue and expressed in a beautiful way.
I could feel their pain when people have no time for them…
This creation of yours showing your pious heart full of empathy which is hard to find these days in this chaotic word.
Specially I loved the last lines where you have sowed the seed of hope!
I am relieved to see that this degenerating world is in safe hands like yours.
    Love,best wishes and blessings.
