Mehar Nanda – Delhi Poetry Slam

Mehar Nanda

Mehar Nanda was born on 28 June 2011, in Ahmedabad, and because she began reading novels and poetry, a spark of inspiration flourished within her at a young age. She began writing short stories, progressing to poetry, which she found more enjoyable. She also enjoys writing plays and novels, though poetry is her main interest. Her other interests are solving Rubik’s cubes and crocheting. She sees life as a journey of words and ideas whooshing past, grasping her thoughts side by side. Poetry is more than just a hobby to her. It’s her only true way of expressing herself in a way in which she feels seen. She enjoys writing about various topics, specifically nature-related themes.

Q: You started writing at such a young age, can you remember the first piece of writing that made you fall in love with poetry?

The first piece of writing that made me love poetry was Samantha Abeel's autobiography, 'My Thirteenth Winter'. Two or three of her poems were included and I was stunned by how words could sound so beautiful together.

Q:What do you prefer more, fiction or verse? What do you think poetry could do that fiction cannot?

I prefer verse as it is extremely versatile and has a type of depth that can reach each part of my soul. I think poetry can leave your heart engraved with an indescribable feeling. Though fiction can do the same, the manner of it is quite different.

Q: How has growing up in Ahmedabad influenced your writing or your love for nature?

Growing up in Ahemdabad has greatly influenced my love for writing and nature. I remember stating up at the clouds on my way to school, smiling at how beautifully those feathery forms cradled the sun. I begun reading novels in Ahemdabad, which led to my love of writing stories. This, in turn, made me fall in love with writing.
