Divyansh Jai Purohit – Delhi Poetry Slam

Divyansh Jai Purohit

“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.” This quote by Charles Dickens, Divyansh’s lifelong role model, captures the philosophy he lives by.

At just 16 and based in New Delhi, Divyansh is a teenager who finds joy in life’s simple pleasures—late-night LEGO builds, football matches, and crafting the perfect rhyme. He dreams of becoming a sharp and compassionate lawyer, someone who uses words with purpose and conviction.

He thrives on spreading smiles and believes that if he can leave someone a little happier than he found them, he has done his part well.

Q: What inspired you to  get into writing poems?

I got into writing poems mainly because it gave me a fun excuse to use big, fancy words which at the start of the journey seemed mind boggling to me. Soon using fancy words transmogrified into trying and perfecting rhyme schemes and finding the perfect words to do so. I would often recite them out loud in my room until eventually my uninterested younger sister would eventually throw me out of the room. Soon people started encouraging me to write more and more and the encouragement kept me going and today it has brought me here.

Q: Do you feel that your passion for law and poetry has an intersection point?

No, I don’t really see my passion for law and poetry having an intersection point. For me they both serve different purposes. I have great fondness for poetry because it is fluid, imaginative and helps me explore abstract ideas. On the other hand I aspire to be a lawyer because it is a field where I can make a meaningful impact and it is a place where I get to solve real problems and think critically. While they both are integral parts of my life, they live in different corners of my heart.

Q: You’ve cited Charles Dickens as an inspiration. Which of his works is your favorite, and why?

My favorite work of Dickens is The Pickwick Papers. The story is about a group of eccentric businessmen trying to make sense of the world.  Mr. Snodgrass, who was an aspiring poet in the story, is a character hard to forget. He is a loveable man who was used by Dickens in the story to lampoon certain personalities in the field of art at the time. The story is a reminder of how literature can be so clever and joyful to read while at the same time offering a hint of critique to society.
