Freedom to dream

Suvarchala Jyothsna G

A daughter of modern times,
Competitively acquires career skills;
Logically explains her opinions;
Diligently earns millions;

She expects the freedom to dream.

A daughter-in-law of modern times,
Is still judged by her culinary skills;
Is still expected to fit in overnight;
Is still told that career isn’t her right;

She loses the freedom to dream.

This is the struggle of many Indian women;
They are no longer confined to the Kitchen;
They are capable enough to earn or make bread,
They are subjected to such obstacles while moving ahead.

They need freedom to dream.

  • This poem perfectly articulates the conflict between society expectations and personal aspirations. The line ‘She expects the freedom to dream’ is incredibly powerful."
