Things That Make Me An Indian – Delhi Poetry Slam

Things That Make Me An Indian

By Nishi Yajnik

As I lay in my bed,

I jot down all the points in my head that make me an Indian,

But still being unable to draw a conclusion,

I wonder if it is my humor that has derived from tarak Mehta ka ooltha chashma,

Or whether it is the way I never miss an ekta kapoor’s serials,

Is it my wisdom and how I am addicted to books like APJ Abdul Kalam,

Or how I want to be an economist like rughuram Rajan,

Is it my spiciness in the way I talk,

Or perhaps my sweetness like the Bengali sondesh,

Where I play garba and bhangda for every little celebration,

Or how no good task is begun without the name of ganesha,

Whether it is the spoon full of sugar and curd before every exam?

Or how I celebrate all the 20 festivals,

Is it the tears when the soldiers died in the Pulwama attack,

Is it the tears shed even for other countries because that’s how I was raised up,

Listening to the stories of mahatma Gandhi and how I support  “ahinsa”,

It is the way that my legs stop whenever the national anthem plays,

Or how my heart fills with respect and love when lata Mangeshkar sings “ae mere watan ke logo”

It is the courage I show in helping another human as the color saffron flashes through me,

It is the belief in peace as I get reminded of the color white,

And how I will always have faith in the soldiers and stand tall with the color green,

And if I had to conclude it all,

I would simply sing “mera jhoota hai japani”
